The Argentina XV has an upcoming three-match South American tour. Writing for El Ciudadano, Lisandro Olearo reports that the Argentina XV has away matches against Brazil, Uruguay, and Chile in August and September. The tour matches are the first fixtures for Argentina’s next-of-XV since facing Namibia, Chile and Uruguay in Rugby World Cup 2023 warm-up matches.
The Argentina XV will be made-up of players from Argentine Super Rugby Americas teams Los Dogos, Los Pampas XV and potentially from other teams such as Yacare as well as members of Los Pumitas from the World Rugby u20 Championship. The u20 captain, Efraín Elías, was a part of Los Dogos winning campaign in Super Rugby Americas 2024. Elías is now with Los Pumas in New Zealand.
The first stop on the tour will be Brazil on August 31. The Argentina XV will then travel to Montevideo to face Uruguay at the Estadio Charrúa on September 07. The final match will be on the western side of the Andes Mountains against Chile on September 14.
The South American tour comes after another proposed tour has not come into fruition. There had been plans for the Argentina XV to tour South Africa in 2024. The dates did not match the availability of the team lo playing in South America. An additional problem was the high tour costs of USD$150,000.
The Argentina XV’s 2023 matches saw opportunities for a handful of Pumas. The same was also the case against Georgia and Portugal in 2022. Indeed, 2024 Rugby Championship Pumas Lucio Sordoni, Franco Molina, Joaquín Oviedo, Tomás Albornoz, Mateo Carreras, Bautista Delguy and Martín Bogado played for the Argentina XV in 2022 and / or 2023.
