July Tests 2024 – Uruguay vs Scotland – ARN Guide

Uruguay play host to Scotland on Saturday. The match will be the first ever clash between the teams in Uruguay and just the second overall. The one prior clash was last century with Scotland having home matches, during Wales’ World Cup. Twenty-five years Scotland is looking to complete a clean-sweep tour of the Americas.

Scotland’s long tour featured July test matches in the capital cities of four Rugby World Cup countries. It started with a record win over Canada in Ottawa. Scotland were less impressive against the USA but won convincingly in Washington D.C. It was a similar case against Chile in Santiago.

The tourists from northern Great Britain are the third opponents for Los Teros in July. Uruguay opened with a good showing against France but were taken to the cleaners by Argentina in a record defeat. A critical difference between Uruguay’s two matches thus far is that Uruguay was full-strength against France but missed names to the Olympics for the second as will also be the case against Scotland.

  • Los Teros have a new skipper; Manuel Leindekar captains his country for the first-time. Regular captain Andrés Vilaseca is out with a knee injury suffered against Argentina. Tomás Inciarte starts out of position at inside center.
  • Scrum repairs see Ignacio Peculo in for Mateo Sanguinetti. Peculo is a tight head by trade and has not played loose head for country nor in MLR.
  • Joaquín Myszka will make his test debut as Uruguay’s replacement hooker. Germán Kessler has returned to France.
  • Santiago Gini will debut weeks after playing for Uruguay at the Junior World Trophy in Scotland.
  • Star scrum-half Santiago Arata is sidelined with a sprained ankle suffered against France.
  • Joaquín Suárez, who debuted against Argentina, earns his first start for Uruguay.
  • Uruguay is without Felipe Arcos Pérez, Baltazar Amaya, Bautista Basso, Ignacio Facciolo and Mateo Viñals who are competing at the Paris Olympic Games. Veteran winger Gastón Mieres is also unavailable due to an ankle injury.
  • All of the Uruguayan players are homegrown.
  • Scotland are unbeaten on their Americas Tour.
  • Huw Jones will earn his 50th cap for Scotland.
  • Scotland’s 23 all play in Scotland. 9 starters are Glasgow Warriors and 6 play for Edinburgh. 5 replacements are Warriors’ players and 3 play of Edinburgh.
  • Kyle Rowe and Ben Healy are the only starting players retained from the win over Chile.
  • Replacements Jamie Dobie and Kyle Steyn played in the three earlier matches on tour.
PREDICTION

Both teams are looking to end their month on a high. For Uruguay this mean putting in a competitive 80 minute performance. For Scotland it means a win with some attractive tries scored. The Estadio Charrúa will mostly be sunny for the match. I will be a mild winter afternoon; appropriate conditions for such a test match. ARN projects Scotland to win by +20 points.
