Chile put on their best performance in a number of years in completing a comfortable win over Belgium. Played at the Estadio Sausalito in Viña del Mar, Chile were 33-5 winners on Saturday. Los Cóndores celebrated the commanding win which came a week after Chile defeated Hong Kong.
As was the case against Hong Kong, Chile’s win was set-up with a dominant first-half performance. Los Cóndores were 20-0 ahead at half-time. The scrum, maul and lineout all worked very well for the Chileans as did the boot of Santiago Videla who scored 16 points.
Videla opened the scoring in the third minute. He landed an early penalty. Belgium struggled in the opening quarter. This was evident with hooker Alexander Raynier yellow carded. Chile used the one-man advantage to execute a lineout to maul attack. Belgium conceded a penalty try with tight head prop Basile Van Parys yellow carded.
The thirteen-man Belgium did well to hold firm. The Diables Noirs / Zwarte Duivells (Black Devils) were able to keep play away from their own try zone. They also had an opportunity to open their scoring but Matías Remue’s 21st minute effort was unsuccessful.
Videla made it 13-0 on 31 minutes. Chile then added to it with their second try. Winger Cristóbal Game went over only to knock-on in the try zone. Game made up for his mistake with an intercept try with half-time approaching. Videla converted.
The second-half saw Chile quickly adding to their lead. Videla was on-target with a penalty. Belgium responded late in the third quarter with hooker Alexander Raynier scoring from a maul. Florian Rumie’s conversion was wide.
Replacement Cóndores tight head, Matías Dittus scored a try from a maul ten minutes later. Videla converted and also added one more penalty. It meant a decisive 33-05 victory.
Chile now turn their attention to Scotland. Los Cóndores third, and final, home test of July will be the toughest. Chile play host to powerhouses Scotland for the first-time in a capped test match. Scotland are coming-off impressive wins over Canada in Ottawa and the USA in Washington, D.C.
Belgium will also return to their field next weekend. The Diables Noirs / Zwarte Duivells take-on Paraguay in Asunción before finishing their South American tour against Brazil in São Paulo.
