Australia Women champions in Madrid, no podium for Americas

Australia’s Women wrapped up a victorious campaign on the World Sevens Series with a dominant 26-7 result over France in the Championship Final at Madrid on Sunday. Canada finished in 4th with the USA just behind in 5th, while Brazil had no trouble retaining their core status for next season.

It was appropriately the Australians who claimed the title after topping the table in the seven tournaments prior to the Grand Final. New Zealand and France traded their spots on the rankings as did the two North American sides.

The Eagles opened the tournament with a strong win over Canada and edged Great Britain before being blow away by New Zealand. They would finish in style with strong wins over Fiji and Ireland. Canada had upset New Zealand in the pool stage but could not repeat the result in the Bronze Final.

In the Core Qualifier bracket it was smooth sailing for Brazil, who won all four of their matches convincingly to retain their spot. Argentina managed a win one pool game over Belgium, but ultimately their bid for promotion would fall short against Japan.

All eyes now turn to the Olympic Games that take place in Paris starting on July 28. Brazil, Canada, and the USA have already qualified to represent the Americas. One spot remains for the winner of the Repechage tournament in Monaco that will include Argentina, Mexico, Paraguay, and Jamaica.
