July Internationals 2024 – Americas Referee Appointments

The July Internationals will break record ground in the Americas. The annual mid-year window will see more matches than ever before in the Western Hemisphere. Canada, the USA, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay will all host matches against visiting test teams from other continents.

Americas officials from the same countries have been allocated matches. Of them Damian Schneider is the only Americas official who will referee test matches outside of the Americas a part of the July Internationals.

Robin Kaluzniak (Canada) will be an assistant for the USA vs Romania in Chicago and also for the USA vs Scotland in Washington, D.C. Fellow Canadian Chris Assmus will be TMO for the Eagles vs Scotland contest.

Canada’s two home test matches in July will feature USA officials. The Ottawa test match against Scotland sees Kahlil Harrison as an assistant referee and Austin Reed has been appointed as the TMO. The match will be played on Saturday, July 06. The test match against Romania sees Kat Roche and Luke Rogan appointed as the assistants to Scotswoman Hollie Davidson.

Rogan will also be an assistant for the Fiji vs New Zealand test match. The fixture will take place at the neutral venue of Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego, California. It will be played on Saturday, July 20.

Damian Schneider’s involvement will begin in June. The Argentine will be an assistant referee for Japan vs Maori All Blacks on Saturday, June 29. The uncapped match will be played at the Prince Chichibu Memorial Ground in Tokyo.

Schneider will officiate a second uncapped fixture in Japan. It will be Japan XV vs Maori All Blacks at the Toyota Stadium in Aichi. It will be played on Saturday, July 06. On Friday, July 12 he will referee Tonga vs Italy in Nuku’alofa. He has been allocated the big game in Montevideo between Uruguay and Scotland to close out the month of July.

Schneider will be joined by Super Rugby Americas colleagues in the July Internationals. Chile v Hong Kong will be refereed by Gonzalo de Achaval (Argentina). Francisco Gonzalez (Uruguay) and Sergio Alvarenga (Paraguay) will be his assistants.

de Achaval and Tomás Bertazza (also of Argentina) will be assistant referees for Uruguay vs France in Montevideo on Wednesday, July 10.

Francisco Gonzalez (Uruguay) will referee Paraguay vs Hong Kong the following weekend. He will be assisted by Simón Larrubia (Argentina) and Frank Méndez (Chile). Also taking place on Saturday, July 13 will be Chile vs Belgium. It will be refereed by Bertazza with Federico Solari (Argentina) and Mauro Rossi (Argentina) as his assistant referees. Bertazza will also referee a match on July 27.

Second generation referee Pablo Deluca will take charge of Brazil vs Hong Kong on Saturday, July 20. He will be assisted by Larrubia and Solari. The same day sees Uruguay at home against Argentina. The referee will not be a Spanish-Speaker; instead, World Rugby have appointed Frenchman Lucas Ramos. Chilean Frank Méndez will be an assistant.

The appointments of South American officials for test matches involving one or more Spanish-Speaking country is welcomed. It should be pointed out that all three of Argentina’s test matches will be refereed in English.

Mauro Rossi has been appointed Paraguay vs Belgium. The match will take place in Asunción on Saturday, July 20. He will be assisted by Argentines Juan Sebastián Maio and Juan Martínez. de Achaval will be an assistant for Chile vs Scotland on the same day.

Tomás Bertazza will return to officiate a match on July 30. He will take charge of Brazil vs Belgium. He will do so with Juan López (Argentina) and Sergio Alvarenga (Paraguay) as his assistants.

* World Rugby’s announcement contained errors. The corrected appointments mean that Frank Méndez (Chile) will be an assistant for Uruguay vs Argentina with Mauro Rossi (Argentina) replacing him as referee for Paraguay vs Belgium.

* Francisco González (Uruguay) will referee at his second Olympic Games.
