Colombians Join Super Rugby Americas 2024

Colombians have joined Super Rugby Americas 2024. April sees the number of Colombians in the South American league increasing from one to six. These players are spread across three different teams in the competition.

Yacare and Peñarol both now have two Colombians each on their rosters. Yacare welcomes center / wing Juan Agudelo from Gatos Rugby Club and flanker Camilo Pacheco from Duendes Rugby Club. Peñarol have signed center / wing Jhon Jader Quiñones from Gatos Rugby Club and fullback Andrés Tellez Hernández  from Lycans.

Os Cobras have Alain Altahona who has played for the Brazilian side on multiple occasions thus far this season. The winger is into his second campaign with Os Cobras. Altahona is now joined by flanker Luis Miguel Giraldo who arrives from Espartanos Marinilla Rugby Club.

The arrival of the Colombians comes shortly before the qualifying pathway for Rugby World Cup 2027 is finalized. As reported by ARN, Colombia, Brazil and Paraguay are to contest the first round with two advancing to face Chile and Uruguay.

Sudamérica Rugby is targeting a repeat, or better, than Rugby World Cup 2023. Chile debuted while Uruguay played in a fifth Rugby World Cup and Argentina have competed in all Rugby World Cups. For 2027 the target is for the trio to all play in Australia with the ambition being a forth side joining them.
