Americas Men fall short at Hong Kong Sevens

The Americas Men’s teams fell short at the Hong Kong Sevens. The USA, Argentina, and Canada were among the twelve competitors. The trio finished 7th, 9th and 12th respectively.

Argentina lead the series overall yet Los Pumas 7’s failed to secure a place in the the quarter-finals in Hong Kong. This was so despite overcoming Great Britain in their final pool stage match. Argentina’s disappointing tournament comes after the South Americans had made seven of the past eight tournament finals.

It started badly for Los Pumas 7’s. Argentina fell to a 14-10 defeat in their opener against the USA. The Eagles defeated Great Britain 26-14 and went on to secure a place in the Quarter Finals. Ireland won the Quarter Final 24-19. The USA finished the tournament in 7th position overall. This came thanks to a 19-17 win over Spain.

Argentina’s 9th place finish was secured with a 42-0 hammering of Samoa. Veteran Gastón Revol went past 100 points for his country on the World Sevens Circuit. Prior to facing Samoa, Argentina defeated Canada 21-0.

The Canadians finished last in Hong Kong. Canada fell 45-5 against Fiji and 31-0 against France on Day One. The winless campaign also saw a 31-0 loss against Australia. The North Americans faced Great Britain in the battle to avoid last spot; Great Britain were 26-17 winners.

New Zealand won the tournament with a 10-7 win over France in the Final. This followed an impressive 26-7 Semi Final victory over Australia and a hard-fought 19-12 Quarter Final win over Fiji.
