Benetton were 18-14 winners over Connacht on Saturday in Treviso, Italy. The win came late with a try in the right corner. Earlier on in the match, Ignacio Mendy scored for Benetton, also doing so in the right corner.
Benetton are currently in 5th position in the United Rugby Championship (URC). This places the team in the play-off’s zone. The URC Quarter Finals will be on the weekend over June 07. The final will be on June 22.
Mendy’s performances throughout the 2023-2024 URC season have him well-placed for a test call-up. The Puma in waiting won his one, and thus far only, 1st cap in the 2021 Rugby Championship against South Africa.
Felipe Contepomi’s first Pumas roster included four wingers. Two of them played at the World Cup: Emiliano Boffelli (Edinburgh) and Mateo Carreras (Bayonne). Santiago Cordero (Connacht) and Bautista Delguy (Clermont) were recalled with Juan Imhoff (Racing 92) and Rodrigo Isgró (Los Pumas 7’s) missing. ARN considers Mendy as very likely for international duty in 2024.
Meanwhile, the stocks of another Ignacio and another Argentine continue to rise. On the back of being named Player of the Match in two of Italy’s matches during the Six Nations, Juan Ignacio Brex delivered this time in a Benetton jersey.
Brex was Player of the Match for Benetton in Saturday’s win over Connacht. Brex had a busy match both offensively and defensively.
