Brazil, Hong Kong and Belgium are three Men’s test rugby teams with aspirations of making their Rugby World Cup debuts. With the tournament expanding from 20 to 24 participants for Australia 2027 the possibility is stronger now than ever.
Chile debuted at Rugby World Cup 2023. Los Cóndores did so by eliminating Canada and all overcoming the USA in qualifiers. Before those matches, however, Chile faced and defeated Brazil. Of note is that Brazil regularly defeated Chile during the Rugby World Cup 2015-2019 cycle but Chile. Selknam and Super Rugby Americas contributed to Chile’s improvement.
Chile is 23rd and Brazil is ranked 29th in the world today. Hong Kong is 24th and Belgium is 28th. Brazil’s 2024 July Internationals will be home matches against Hong Kong and Belgium. The matches will take-place on July 20 and 27 respectively. Venues are yet to be confirmed.
Brazil’s objective is to qualify for the World Cup. Chile showed the way last time around and with expansion there are realistic chances for more newcomers to the World Cup. Changes are set to allocate Asia 1 a direct spot, meaning Hong Kong is very close to debuting.
Belgium upset Portugal in the Rugby Europe Championship earlier this year. This is an indication of a tough opponent set to tour South America and take-on Brazil. Belgium and Brazil previously met once before; Brazil were 23-19 upset winners over Belgium in Brussels in 2017.
Hong Kong is also an opponent with one prior test match against Os Tupis. The previous match took place in 2011. Hong Kong were 37-03 winners at the neutral venue of Dubai.
