Uruguayan rugby fans had a weekend to remember at the expense of Chile. Peñarol were winners over Selknam in the Super Rugby Americas match in Santiago while Los Teros 7’s were crowned champions in the home leg of the Challenge Series Sevens in Montevideo.
Uruguay dominated Hong Kong in the final. The South Americans were 28-0 winners over the top Asian side. Diego Ardao, Bautista Basso, Ignacio Facciolo and Ignacio Alvarez were the try scorers in the final.
The title sees Uruguay now on 36 competition points out of a maximum total of 40. This brings Los Teros 7’s level with Kenya for top spot. Both Kenya and Uruguay are therefore on target to qualify as two of the four teams for the promotion-relegation tournament in Madrid, Spain.
One foot is in the door to Madrid; however, there is no room for complacency. There is a 10 point gap between Uruguay and Kenya on the one hand and the third placed side on the other. Good performances will now be required at the remaining tournament in Munich, Germany on May 18-19.
Uruguay’s route to the final in Montevideo saw South American. Uruguay were 10-7 winners over Chile in their Semi Final. Prior to that los charrúas defeated Portugal 26-7, Papua New Guinea 31-19, and Germany 26-19. It was not a perfect showing, though, as Uganda were 26-21 winners over Uruguay.
Mexico opened their tournament on day one against Chile. Las Serpientes were beaten 46-0. A narrow 29-26 loss against Japan followed also on day one. On day two Mexico fell 39-0 to Hong Kong and 44-0 to Japan. Mexico’s last match was a 47-12 loss against Papua New Guinea.
Chile finished the tournament in fourth position. Kenya downed Los Cóndores 7’s 31-12 in the Bronze final. Selknam players Ernesto Tchimino and Luca Strabucchi were Chile’s try scorers. In earlier tournament matches Los Cóndores 7’s defeated both Germany and Japan 12-7, Mexico 46-0 and fell 14-9 against Hong Kong.
