Double Argentine Influence in Italian Six Nations win over Scotland

Italy ended an eleven year streak of home defeats in the Six Nations on Saturday. The Gonzalo Quesada coached side defeated Scotland 31-29 in Rome for the first win since the Argentine took on the role.

Quesada arrived with Italy’s test team in meltdown. Thunderous defeats against France and New Zealand at the World Cup only saw debates resurfacing as to promotion and relegation in the Six Nations. Having lost narrowly against England and drawn against France, Quesada’s rookie season in charge was already a success. Factor in beating Scotland and now Italy can dream of having a the team capable of regularly competing against top sides.

Quesada’s team scored tries through Juan Ignacio Brex, Stephen Varny and debutant Louis Lynagh. Brex is a former Argentina 7’s player and Argentina XV player. Having been down the rankings for an opportunity with Los Pumas, the Buenos Aires center took the opportunity to play in Italy before going through the Olympic loophole.

Brex arguably had his finest performance for Italy in Rome on Saturday. He was awarded with the Man of the Match award. Both Brex and Quesada will be up against many of their friends in November. Italy will play host to Argentina during the November Internationals.
