France End Drought to Become Champions of Los Angeles Sevens

France are the 2024 Champions of the Los Angeles Sevens. The title came with a 21-0 victory over an outmatched Great Britain in the Final. France’s win shakes-up the medal picture for the upcoming Paris Olympic Games. Victory in Los Angeles was the first tournament win by the French Men’s team in 19 years.

France’s prior title was in the 2005 Paris Sevens. Superstar Antoine Dupont was truly inspirational. His play-making took France’s game-play to a new level. The Rugby World Cup 2019 and 2023 Quarter Finalist was playing in just his second tournament after debuting at the 2024 Vancouver Sevens.

Argentina were champions of the 2024 Vancouver Sevens. It was the third consecutive triumph for Los Pumas 7’s. They were clear favorites going in to Los Angeles but finished 5th overall. The Bronze Final was won by Ireland who completed a 24-7 win over Spain.

Despite missing out on the podium, Argentina retain a 20-point lead at the top of the standings for the season. Los Pumas 7’s downed Fiji 26-21 to finish 5th overall in Los Angeles.

Argentina were well-placed after the pool stage but fell to Ireland in their Quarter Final. Ireland then took-on France where they were beaten 26-24. The Semi Final included a key moment in which Billy Dardis missed a late conversion.

Great Britain won a low-scoring Semi Final against Spain. The British secured a place in the final thanks to a 10-7 victory over Los Leones 7’s.

Traditional heavyweights Fiji, New Zealand, and South Africa all had appalling tournaments by their standards. Fiji lost to Argentina to finish in 6th position. New Zealand lost 12-5 against Samoa to finish in 10th position while South Africa overcame Canada 28-15 to finish 11th.

Canada’s loss against South Africa meant the North Americans finished dead last. Meanwhile, the home country, the USA, finished the tournament in 8th spot. The Eagles fell 24-14 to Australia in the 7th Place Final.
