Canada third, New Zealand are women’s champs in Vancouver

Canada took home Bronze while New Zealand were crowned Women’s Champions at the Vancouver Sevens. It’s the second straight title at the BC Place tournament for the Black Ferns. For the Canadians it’s the best result of the season and first podium finish since the 2019-20 circuit.

A loss to France in their opening match did not deter the Maple Leafs. They rebounded with a blowout win over Great Britain and convincing victory over Spain. The Women’s Eagles were up next in the Quarter Final and a 12-nil halftime lead was just enough to secure a spot in the Semis.

New Zealand proved too strong with a Portia Woodman try early in the second half pushing the eventual winners out of reach. Australia were up next in the Bronze Final and this time things would go Canada’s way, with a second-half try from Charity Williams proving the difference.

The Women’s Eagles settled for 5th place after falling to Canada in the quarters. It was Australia who handed the USA their first loss of the tournament in the pool stage. Sarah Levy’s double led the way in the 5th-place Final win over Fiji.

Brazil impressed in the pool stage with wins over Ireland and South Africa, but couldn’t match their success in the knockout stage. France were a clear step ahead in the Cup Quarter Final and then it was Spain who edged the Yaras in the 7th Place Final.

Canada’s progress bumps them up to 5th overall on the standings. They sit level with the USA on points but trail the Eagles on scoring differential. Brazil are currently in 9th spot, six points below Great Britain. Australia remain at the top with 72 points to New Zealand’s 66.

The series moves on the Los Angeles next weekend.
