The Americas claimed a pair of top-four finishes at the Sevens Challenger Series opener in Dubai. Chile finished in 2nd place with Uruguay one spot behind, putting both South American sides in a strong position to reach core qualification.
Kenya took top spot, recovering from a pool stage defeat against Germany to edge the Chileans in the Cup Final. It was the Germans who Los Cóndores had flown past in the Semi Final, redeeming an earlier miscue against Tonga in the opening round.
Los Teros also suffered defeat in their first match of the tournament, falling to Georgia by two points, but they bounced back to cruise into the Quarter Finals. Tonga proved a stern challenge but Uruguay were up to the task, but the Simbas were too big a step in the Semi Final. A late try from Baltazar Amaya, his second of the match, gave the Teros the Bronze Final over Germany.
Mexico were winless throughout and finished at the bottom of the ladder. The Challenger Series continues on March 8 when the Montevideo leg begins.
