Facundo Isa set for year-long break from Pumas

Facundo Isa says he intends to take a break from test rugby. The long-time Pumas back row made the statement in a press conference ahead of Toulon’s Champions Cup match against Munster. While he stopped short of international retirement, he says a year-long break is required to rest his body.

Since making his test debut against Scotland in November 2014, Isa has been a staple in Argentinean selections and now has 51 caps. He was controversially omitted from the 2019 World Cup roster by Mario Ledesma, only to be recalled a year later. Most recently he was part of Michael Cheika’s team at the 2023 tournament in France.

Isa says he has not spoken to new Pumas coach Felipe Contepomi but intends to focus entirely on his club side in 2024. The 30-year-old also recognized that returning to test rugby after time off will not be easy, identifying Joaquín Oviedo and Bautista Pedemonte as the future of the No8 jersey for Los Pumas.
