MLR Notes: du Toit among new Miami names, Tasi heads to Houston

Guiseppe du Toit is back in Major League Rugby. The 28-year-old Canadian international is one of six additions to the Miami Sharks ahead of their maiden campaign. du Toit was a regular in the Toronto Arrows midfield from 2019 through 2022 but spent the past year focusing on education at Trinity Western University. Primarily an inside center, he can also fill in at flyhalf if needed and adds a right-footed goal kicking option to the squad.

Also headed to the Sharks is another Arrows alumni in winger Avery Oitomen, former DC winger Marcos Young, and ex-ATL prop Jonas Petrakopoulos. Midfielder Josh McAdam joins from the Hounds, though he is yet to make his MLR debut, and Nicolás Elewaut arrives from Argentine club side CUBA.

Oitomen, Young, and Elewaut join an outside backs group that also includes Eric Naposki, Santiago Videla, and Matías Freyre. Connor Burns, ex-Utah, is also an option though it appears the Sharks will also consider him in the midfield. McAdam is originally from South Africa but qualifies for the USA on residency. He is a converted loose forward who stands 6’3″ (1.91m) and spent time with the USA Hawks program in 2023.

Petrakopoulos finds himself on the same roster as Alec McDonnell once again. The duo broke into MLR with New York in 2020. Both are primarily loosehead props, though Petrakopoulos has experience across the front row. He previously represented the Netherlands at u20 level in a capture match but is US-eligible through the union transfer regulation.

The SaberCats have also snapped up a former Arrow. Tautalatasi Tasi adds depth to the Cats midfield that already boasts Sam Hill, Louritz van der Schyff, and Dom Akina. Joining him in Houston is Seimou Smith, who returns to MLR after four seasons away. A versatile back who can play center or wing, he played two games for New York in 2019 and spent the past year with the American Raptors in Super Rugby Americas.
