Argentine Germán Fernández will join the Italian coaching team to work alongside Gonzalo Quesada. The 55-year-old joins the coaching regime ahead of the upcoming 2024 Six Nations Championship.
Fernández has been involved in the FIR since 2002 as the Director of the youth and High Performance programs. This includes the recent u23’s victories against the Ireland academy.
Before taking up his post in Italy, Fernández worked in the Argentine High Performance system. He was the UAR’s High Performance skills coach from 2008-2018. This saw him briefly working alongside Quesada who was Head Coach of Los Jaguares in Super Rugby from 2018-2020.
Quesada returned to European to coach Stade Français while Fernández took up a coaching position with Viadana. They will now work together as Italy begin a new World Cup cycle. They are tasked with turning around a team that struggled against France and New Zealand at Rugby World Cup 2023.
The goal of Italy getting out of their pool is arguably stronger than ever now that the World Cup has expanded to 24 teams. The first step sees players from United Rugby Championship (URC) Benetton and Zebre in a recent training camp which included former Argentina XV center Juan Ignacio Brex.
