Peñarol is preparing for the future. The future is now as evidenced by the Uruguayan side bringing in Santiago Cagnone for Super Rugby Americas 2024. The two-time defending champions will be the home of the Uruguayan-eligible Pumita in the upcoming season.
Cagnone is just 18-years-old but has been identified as a player of interest to Uruguay. He comes from Sporting Rugby in Mar del Plata, Argentina. He has already represented both Argentina and Uruguay at the junior level. He played for Argentina at junior level in 2022 and played for Uruguay, including against Argentina, at u20 level in 2023.
The front-rower qualifies for Uruguay via his father who is Uruguayan. He is to join Baltazar Amaya on Peñarol’s forthcoming roster for Super Rugby Americas 2024. Amaya was a star for Uruguay at Rugby World Cup 2023. He qualified via residency after moving across the Rio de la Plata at the age of 8.
Cagnone played for Uruguay at the 2023 World Rugby U20 Trophy. Peñarol is to be his fist professional rugby experience. He arrives in Montevideo with Reinaldo Piussi and Ignacio Péculo having departed for Major League Rugby. In addition, Italy is now the home to Diego Arbelo. The tight head prop joined Colorno following the World Cup.
Cagnone told ESPN Argentina that he is looking to improve his level so as to fight for a starting spot in the front-row of Los Teritos.
