Domingo Miotti Inspires Oyonnax to home win over Pau

Domingo Miotti inspired Oyonnax to a home win over Pau on Friday. Oyonnax were 34-13 winners with the Tucumano organizing play and kicking points from fly half. Miotti’s kicking put Pau’s back-three through hell.

Miotti sent the ball deep, causing not only problems but also securing a 50-22 for Oyonnax. He also played well as a distributor; Oyonnax’s first try came with Miotti providing the assist. His goal-kicking was under pressure due to the conditions in eastern France. Miotti responded with 19 points as he kicked 5 penalties and 2 conversions.

At the time of publication, Oyonnax are 10th in the Top 14. This is a satisfactory position for a team that is back in France’s elite from the Pro D2.

Miotti is a native of Tucumán in northern Argentina. He is a product of Argentina’s high performance system. His pathway to Los Pumas included playing for Argentina u20’s Los Pumas 7’s, and the Argentina XV.

The 27-year-old arrived at Oyonnax this season. He made the move from the Glasgow Warriors in Scotland to play in the Top 14. Oyonnax won promotion from the Pro D2 last season. In the second of his two seasons in Scotland Miotti played in the European Challenge Cup Final. The Glasgow Warriors were beaten by Toulon.

He debuted for Argentina in 2020. He did so after having played Super Rugby for Los Jaguares in 2019-2020. His professional career then continued in Australia; Miotti joined the Western Force. From there he signed for the Glasgow Warriors where he played from 2021-2023.

Miotti has 5 caps for Argentina. He debuted under Mario Ledesma only to become out of favor with Santiago Carreras moved from the back-three to fly half. Nicolás Sánchez and Benjamín Urdapilleta were also preferred. Michael Cheika went for the same players in addition to Tomás Albornoz. With change now on the way there could be more opportunities.

Not only is Felipe Contepomi an all-time great Puma but his natural position was fly half. Miotti offers a play-making option as does Zebre fly half Gerónimo Prisciantelli. These two players have been the in-form Argentines in the fly half position since Rugby World Cup 2023.
