Nicolás Sánchez will continue his career in Japan. The veteran Puma has signed for Tokyo Suntory Sungoliath. He will play alongside double World Cup winner Cheslin Kolbe in addition to New Zealand captan Sam Cane, Japanese scrum half Naoto Saito and winger Kotaro Matushima.
The move means two high-profile Argentines are now playing their rugby in Japan. Sánchez will be at Tokyo Suntory Sungoliath while Pablo Matera plays for Honda Heat. Both men featured at Rugby World Cup 2023. They are two of Argentina’s top three most capped players of all-time.
Sánchez signed for the Japanese club rather than the Miami Sharks. This will see him playing in Asia after previous experiences in France and his native Argentina. Sánchez played in the Top 14 for Bordeaux (2011-2014), Toulon (2014-2015), Stade Français (2018-2022) and Brive (2022-2023). He played three seasons of Super Rugby for Los Jaguares (2016-2018).
His move to Suntory Sungoliath follows an important decision. The Tucumano is committed to keep playing for Los Pumas. Having had time to reflect on the World Cup and his future, Sánchez decided that he still has plenty to give and would like to play more for his country.
The veteran fly half admits that he thought the Bronze Final against England was his final test cap. That match was the 104th of his test career. He made his debut for Argentina against Uruguay in 2010.
