South Africa edge Argentina to win Men’s Dubai title

After a disappointing 2022-23 campaign, South Africa fired a statement of intent with a Cup Final victory over Argentina to start the new sevens season off with a bang in Dubai. Los Pumas were easily the best Americas team on display, with the Eagles finishing in 8th spot and a winless Canada at the bottom.

It was a desperate start to Day Two for the Eagles, who were crushed by New Zealand in the Quarter Finals. In accordance with the new ranking system they were immediately thrown into the 7th place Final against Australia but again were decidedly second-best.

Argentina meanwhile came from behind to beat Samoa in the Quarter Finals, thanks to a pair of tries from Marcos Moneta. New Zealand were next and again it was a late surge that did the business, with Tobías Wade’s conversion of a late Gastón Revol try just enough. South Africa proved superior in the final with the Blitzboks holding on in a tense second half to secure the result.

Canada held a halftime lead against Great Britain only to see Harry Glover score late to steal the victory and send the Maple Leafs into the last-place decider. Once again the second half was their undoing as Spain took the victory by three tries to two.

The series moves on to Cape Town next weekend.
