Americas Rankings to Close Out 2023

The Americas Rankings have been compiled to conclude 2023. International competition concluded in November with Brazil, Canada and the USA joining Spain to compete for the Vila Cup. The USA were crowned champions and improved upon their rankings as a result.

The outcome of the Vila Cup saw the USA overtaking Uruguay to reclaim second place in the Americas Rankings. The USA recorded wins over Brazil and Spain in the tournament. The USA thus ends 2023 one spot above Uruguay despite not having played at the World Cup. Uruguay had a solid World Cup with strong performances in three of the four matches. Los Teros defeated Namibia and pushed both France and Italy.

Canada also recorded a win in Spain. Having been badly beaten by Los Leones first up, the Maple Leafs dominated Brazil in their other match. The outcome meant that Canada overtook Chile in the Americas Rankings to finish 2023 in fourth.

Chile made their World Cup debut this year. Los Cóndores were competitive for periods against Samoa and Japan. Chile nonetheless did more than that which had been expected. The final ranking of the year of 5th is also very narrowly, in points terms, below Canada’s ranking.

Argentina had a strong Rugby World Cup. Los Pumas defeated Samoa, Chile and Japan to advance to the Quarter Finals. Argentina then eliminated Wales in the Quarter Finals to book a Semi Final against New Zealand. Despite finishing 4th Argentina actually lost rankings points during the World Cup.
