Michael Cheika may stay on as Pumas Coach Until Rugby World Cup 2027

Michael Cheika wants to remain in charge of Los Pumas. The Unión de Rugby Argentina (UAR) want him to stay on as Head Coach. With both parties wanting the same thing the Australian is to stay on until Rugby World Cup 2027, writes Sergio Stuart for Olé.

Cheika replaced Mario Ledesma as Head Coach of Argentina. He was in charge of the South Americans for two full years of international competition, the second of which culminated with Los Pumas finishing fourth at Rugby World Cup 2023.

Cheika met with UAR President Gabriel Travaglini in Argentina to discuss the possibilities moving forward. It was partially a change of plans after Cheika’s assistant Felipe Contepomi had been positioned to be the next Head Coach.

With the UAR having been pleased with Los Pumas under Cheika, the national governing body is in search of the best possible formula for the next World Cup. This means Cheika remains Head Coach and his support staff is also unchanged.

Cheika will thus be in charge of the team with his support staff being former Pumas Felipe Contepomi, Andrés Bordoy, and Juan Fernández Lobbe and former New Zealand Rugby League player David Kidwell.

The new cycle is set to begin now. There will be some player changes due to retirements, long seasons and injuries. Los Pumas next play in July, 2024. Argentina will host France for two test matches and also take-on a Tier 2 side at home.
