Mateo Carreras is no longer a Newcastle Falcon. The 2023-2024 season is his final season under contract with the Newcastle Falcons but is has now concluded. Carreras is now officially a Bayonne player.
Newcastle Falcons and Bayonne came to an arrangement for Carreras to move to the Top 14 early. He will be at Bayonne in France’s elite in the lead up to Rugby World Cup 2027. Mateo Carreras was Argentina’s starting left winger at Rugby World Cup 2023.
His involvement in the World Cup came two years after his test debut. Mateo Carreras debuted for Argentina against Australia in Townsville in 2021. He returned to face the Wallabies in 2023 where he scored in a winning effort. He presently has been capped 17 times.
Mateo Carreras joined Emiliano Boffelli and Juan Cruz Mallía in the back-three. The trio were the regular combination. The exception was the pool match against Chile wherein rotation saw Juan Imhoff, Rodrigo Isgró and Martín Bogado starting in the back-three.
Argentina finished fourth in the World Cup. Mateo Carreras was among the best Pumas backs and let audiences know how good of a winger he is. Highlights included his hat-trick in the win over Japan and his bumping off of English defenders in the Bronze Final.
Bayonne is home now to Carreras and two other Pumas. Second-rower Lucas Paulos and former Pumas hooker Facundo Bosch play for the club. Uruguay’s Manuel Leindekar also plays for Bayonne and will return to Oyonnax next season.
Carreras was one of five Pumas at the Falcons this season. The others are center Matías Orlando and fellow World Cup players lock Pedro Rubiolo, tight head Eduardo Bello and center Matías Moroni.
Bello joined the Falcons from Saracens and previously played for Zebre in the United Rugby Championship (URC). Rubiolo arrived last season and played flanker though featured in the second-row at the World Cup. Rubiolo, Bello and Carreras all have age on their side to prepare ahead for Rugby World Cup 2027.
Carreras was well-known to Newcastle Falcons’ fans before the World Cup. He scored thirteen tries in the 2022-2023 English Premiership season for the Northern English side.
