Uruguayan Emiliano Caffera becomes Brazilian Head Coach

Emiliano Caffera is the new Head Coach of Brazil. The appointment is a double as the Uruguayan will be in charge of Brazil’s Men’s and Women’s test teams: Os Tupis and As Yaras.

The appointment comes with Brazil looking to be an expansion team. The new four places at the Men’s Rugby World Cup means that Brazil is closer than ever at realizing the dream of playing at a Rugby World Cup. Caffera was on Chile’s coaching staff for their debut World Cup this year in France.

Caffera was Los Cóndores’ backs coach at Rugby World Cup 2023. He was an assistant to fellow Uruguayan Pablo Lemoine who has signed to remain Chile’s Head Coach for a further four years. Also like Lemoine, Caffera has experience playing at a Rugby World Cup.

Caffera had an eleven year test career as a player. He made his debut for Uruguay at scrum-half against Namibia in 2020. Los Teros were 23-12 winners that day at Carrasco Polo in Montevideo. He was one of twelve debutants involved in the match.

He played at Rugby World Cup 2003. He did so against South Africa and England. His test career concluded with him playing fly half in Uruguay’s home draw against Romania in 2010. It was part of the Rugby World Cup 2011 repechage. Caffera’s test career ended with him having 35 caps.

The 45-year-old Uruguayan has the official mission of getting Os Tupis and As Yaras to successfully qualify for the Men’s and Women’s Rugby World Cups. The next Women’s Rugby World Cup will be in England in 2025 and will involve 16 teams. This marks an expansion from 12.

The Men’s Rugby World Cup is expanding from 20 to 24. It will be the eleventh Men’s Rugby World Cup and the third to take place in Australia. South America will be a region to watch after three teams competed at Rugby World Cup 2023. Chile’s debut coincided with Uruguay playing in their fifth World Cup and Argentina continuing to be among the leading teams as Los Pumas reached the Semi Finals for the third time in their history.

Uruguay’s 36-26 win over Namibia in Lyon took Los Teros‘ wins in Rugby World Cup matches to four. The South Americans have wins over teams from varying regions of the world: Europe, Africa and Oceania. The wins came at Rugby World Cups 1999, 2003, 2019 and 2023.

Uruguay defeated the USA to qualify for Rugby World Cup 2023 as did Chile. Los Cóndores sent the USA into repechage and eliminated Canada. Both Canada and the USA will be teams expected to be among the 24 competing in Australia 2027.
