New Zealand Set Up Paris Semi Final Showdown against Argentina

New Zealand overcame Ireland 28-24 on Saturday to qualify for the Rugby World Cup Semi Finals. Many pundits had Ireland as favorites to win. The result, however, sees the Emerald Isle eliminated at the Quarter Finals stage for the 8th time in ten World Cups.

The All Blacks lost against France in the opening match of the World Cup. The All Blacks recovered to defeat Namibia and Italy before downing Uruguay to qualify for the final 8. New Zealand will now look to the other side of the Rio de la Plata.

New Zealand and Ireland both scored three tries. Wingers Leicester Fainga’anuku and Will Jordan and N8 Ardie Savea for the All Blacks. Ireland’s two first-half tries were scored by New Zealanders. Center Bundee Aki and scrum-half Jamison Gibson-Park touched down. Ireland scored a penalty try early on in the final quarter.

The match went down to the wire. New Zealand received two yellow cards with scrum-half Aaron Smith and hooker Codie Taylor both out for ten minute periods. Gibson-Park scored while Smith was off while Ireland’s penalty try came for Taylor pulling down an advancing maul. It was an automatic penalty try and yellow card.

Argentina and New Zealand play each other annually. They do so over two matches in non Rugby World Cup years. This year the prior match saw New Zealand winning 41-12 in Mendoza. Argentina defeated the All Blacks 25-18 in New Zealand in 2022 and 25-15 in Australia in 2020.

Los Pumas have done it before. Now they will have the opportunity of doing so for a place in the Rugby World Cup 2023 Final. New Zealand won the inaugural Rugby World Cup in 1987 and also won in 2011 and 2015. The All Blacks lost their Semi Final to England in 2019.

Argentina has previously competed in two Rugby World Cup Semi Finals. The first was against South Africa in 2007 and the second against Australia in 2015. Los Pumas were beaten on both occasions.

The 2023 Semi Final Showdown will take place in Paris on Friday, October 20. The winner will qualify for the final on Saturday, October 28 while the loser will contest the Bronze Final, also in Paris, on Friday, October 27.
