MLR Notes: DC lands ex-Pumas 7s star Müller, Murphy to Houston

Old Glory have landed another top class finisher ahead of the 2024 season. Former Pumas 7s star Axel Müller has signed on, joining Scotland international Damien Hoyland in a revamped backline that will be spearheaded by returning playmaker Jason Robertson.

Müller’s signing is a surprise, given the 29-year-old had previously been linked with a move to the expansion Miami Sharks,. Since departing the World Sevens Series he has been a regular starter in the French Top 14 with Toulon, Oyonnax, and Brive and is currently playing with Nationale side Périgueux.

The signing is a statement of intent for DC. Müller was tipped for senior Pumas caps but internal politics with the Argentine union denied him full test honors. He then aspired to play for the Eagles, having lived in the USA for a decade and acquiring US-citizenship, but without American ancestry was not eligible to use the new Union Transfer regulation.

Houston have added quality to their already impressive stable of forwards with the signing of Ronan Murphy from the American Raptors. The 25-year-old loose forward was a first choice player for the Colorado-based side during their inaugural campaign in Super Rugby Americas, and has previously represented the USA at u20 and senior ‘A’ level.

The SaberCats have lost Danny Barrett to retirement but at season’s end still had US internationals Malon Al-Jiboori and Hanco Germishuys on their roster along with rising talents Emmanuel Albert and Asa Carter, and South African duo Wynand Grassmann and Gideon van Wyk. All are back row forwards, with Keni Nasoqeqe and Marno Redelinghuys also often utilised as blindside flankers.

Toronto have secured loosehead prop Connor Grindal for a second campaign. The 25-year-old was raised in Australia but is Canadian-eligible through his parents. Grindal began the 2023 season as third choice loosehead but picked up four starts in the second half of the season.
