Arundell scores five as England rout Chile in Lille

Five tries from Henry Arundell led England to a 71-0 victory over Chile in Lille on Saturday. Pace and power was the main difference between the two sides, though the Chileans will be disappointed with inaccuracy at the lineout and the failure to take advantage of a handful of scoring opportunities.

The Cóndores showed well in the opening quarter, initially holding England to no points. A 50-22 from Matías Garafulic gave Chile a chance to score first but the lineout was botched horribly and England broke free. Soon after poor defense at the scrum left Arundell wide open to touch down in the corner.

Chile’s confidence seemed to dip after the score. Theo Dan broke from the back of a maul to score England’s second try soon after. It wasn’t long before Arundell was in for a double after the Cóndores were caught napping on a quick tap, with Dan throwing the miss-pass for the winger to saunter over.

There were two more tries in England before halftime. Bevan Rodd wrestled over from close range after a series of powerful runs from the English ball-carriers. A poor pass from Rodrigo Fernández then gave the ball away and Marcus Smith curled around the outside, his grubber ahead popping up perfectly for the fullback to regather for a superb individual score.

Early in the second half Matías Dittus was singled out for foul play at an England throw-in, and the subsequent lineout drive saw Dan getting his second try of the game. Next it was Elliot Dally spotting space in behind the Chilean defense with his chip-ahead ending with a hat-trick for Arundell.

A fourth try for Arundell was largely of his own making with an outside break followed by a chip-and-regather. Jack Willis won a turnover, with Smith breaking free and feeding the 20-year-old winger for his fifth try. Willis himself wrapped things up with a break up the middle and grounding between the posts to leave Farrell an easy shot for his 8th conversion of the match.

It’s a week off for England, who return on October 7th against Samoa. Chile conclude their first ever World Cup campaign against South American neighbors Argentina in one week’s time.
