MLR Notes: DC signs Rob Harley, TRN adds English Premiership

Old Glory DC have announced another significant addition to their forward pack. Former Scotland international Rob Harley has signed on with the Eastern Conference Finalists. The 33-year-old is currently on a short-term deal as a ‘World Cup joker’ with Pro D2 side Colomiers.

Harley spent 12 seasons with Glasgow Warriors before moving in France in 2022 initially with Carcassonne. He won the last of his 23 test caps against Tonga in October of 2021. Standing 6’6″ (1.98m), Harley is known for his hard-hitting defense and is equally comfortable at lock or blindside flanker.

DC had already confirmed the arrival of former NOLA lock Ignacio Dotti from Uruguay and the return of star flyhalf Jason Robertson from France. Harley will be familiar with new DC Head Coach Simon Ross, with the latter helping out at Glasgow during the 2011-12 season.

Mitch Richardson has signed on for a sixth season with the Arrows. It comes as no surprise after the 27-year-old midfielder enjoyed his finest season as a professional during 2023, a rare bright spot in an otherwise disappointing campaign in Toronto. Richardson’s form was rewarded with his senior international debut against Tonga last month.

Another Canadian international has re-signed with his Major League Rugby club. Loosehead prop Liam Murray will head back to Dallas for a third season in Jackals colors. The news comes ahead of his 26th birthday next month, and will see Murray looking to build on his 15 appearances and 9 starts from 2023. Both were career highs.

The Seattle Seawolves have a new club president. Tom Barden will also act as Chief Operating Officer. He was recently an instructor at the Michael G. Foster School of Business and previously spent 27 years with IT consulting firm Accenture, departing the company in 2015 after 15 years as a senior executive.

MLR’s digital streaming platform The Rugby Network has obtained exclusive North American broadcast rights for the English Premiership. Every game over the next two seasons will be available on the site that already streams every MLR game and most recently broadcast the Men’s Eagles tests in Europe.

It’s worth noting that TRN will not be continuing its partnership with service provider RugbyPass, which is owned by World Rugby. It means RugbyPass articles and editorials will no longer appear on TRN. The league is set to announce a new provider for TRN next month. League sources indicate the arrangement is more streamlined contractually and allows for the evolution to a subscription model.
