Ruben de Haas will be sidelined for several months after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament while playing for the Cheetahs against the Western Force. The 24-year-old USA international suffered the injury in the first half of this past weekend’s Toyota Challenge match.
An initial diagnosis suggested it could be as long as nine months in recovery, but de Haas has now conferred with the same doctor who repaired Springbok captain Siya Kolisi’s knee. The new prognosis is that a recovery time of six months is more likely.
It’s a blow for de Haas, who was making his return to Cheetahs colors after spending two years in England with Saracens. He had earned the starting scrumhalf jersey and was expected to play a significant role for the South African side in the upcoming European Challenge Cup.
At international level de Haas will miss out on the USA’s end-of-year test series, which has yet to be confirmed by the union. If his recovery follows the six-month timeline he would be fit in good time to build match fitness for the start of the 2024 test window.
