Brazil proved too good for Colombia on Wednesday. Played at the Estadio Héroes de Curupayti in Asunción, Paraguay Os Tupis dominated Los Tucanes for a 64-07 victory. The result means Brazil are 2-0 in the South American Four Nations while Colombia are 0-2.
Brazil opened the 2023 South American Four Nations with a well-earned win over the Chile XV. The Chileans side played as the next-of-XV but there were a sprinkling of players who are on the World Cup roster. Meanwhile, Colombia were well-beaten first-up by Paraguay.
Paraguay well-and-truly humbled Colombia in the first round. It was a match to underline the price that Colombia has paid by pulling-out of the Súper Liga Americana de Rugby (SLAR) / Super Rugby Americas. Colombia’s level has fallen notably while Paraguay is now closing-in on Brazil.
Brazil will certainly be careful about their planning against Paraguay. They will go in to the match full of confidence. Os Tupis played good rugby against the Chile XV and again against Colombia.
Brazil scored early through winger Daniel Lima. The try had Brazil on the board before the team managers had had the chance to take a seat. The conversion was missed but it was a sound day overall for Brazil’s goal-kickers. Lucas Spago and Lucas Tranquez combined for a 7/10 return.
The match was over as a contest long before half-time. Hooker Endy Willian Pinheiro scored a double, one being a try from a lineout to maul attack. Fullback Guilherme Coghetto and second-rower Gabriel Oliveira also scored opening half tries.
Colombia found a response through their captain. Jhojan Ortíz touched down for Los Tucanes for the final try of the opening half. Fullback Alejandro Guisao converted for a 33-07 scoreline.
The second-half saw five further tries scored. All of them were scored by Os Tupis. Har-unning N8 André Arruda scored the first. It was followed b tries to Douglas Rauth, Henrique Ferreira, Lucas Tranquez, and Sérgio Luna.
Os Tupis now turn their attention to Paraguay. That match will be the final of the South American Four Nations. Colombia must regather smartly and turn their attention to the Chile XV. Both matches will be played in Asunción on Sunday.
