USA Men defeat Canada to earn Olympic ticket

A packed house at Starlight Stadium in Langford wasn’t enough to inspire Canada to victory at the Rugby Americas North Sevens. Instead it was the USA who claimed the Men’s title with a convincing 24-14 victory in the Gold Final, in doing so earning their ticket to the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

The two North American sides were unbeaten heading into the final, though the Canadians had been given a scare by Jamaica in the final round of the pool stage. A scintillating individual try from Perry Baker at the end of the first half proved the turning point in the Gold Final, with the Canadians scoring late to make the result more respectable.

Canada will have one more shot at qualification as they will now compete in the Olympic Repechage tournament next June. Mexico will also take part, after they clinched their place on the Sevens Challenger Series with a narrow victory over Jamaica on the Bronze Final.
