Brazil is ready to begin international competition in 2023. Os Tupis are set to travel to Asunción, Paraguay to compete in the 2023 South American Four Nations. The competition will see the test sides of Paraguay, Brazil and Colombia competing as well as the Chilean next-of-XV, the Chile XV.
The South American Championship will be contested over three match days. Fixtures will all take place in Asunción and will be played from August 19 to 27. Brazil begin against the Chile XV on August 19. They face Colombia in game two on August 23 and finish against Paraguay on August 27.
Brazil are the reigning champions of the competition. In 2022 it was the South American Tri Nations. Barranquilla, Colombia was the venue. Brazil went unbeaten; defeating Colombia 52-13 and Paraguay 31-28 to be crowned champions. Brazil met Paraguay again later in the year and won 34-19.
Brazil’s roster is based on the country’s professional rugby team, Os Cobras. The team finished bottom in Super Rugby Americas 2023. The 28-man roster for the South American Four Nations contains 21 Cobras.
Gabriel Paganini will lead the team. He acted as captain for the early rounds of Super Rugby Americas 2023 and led Brazil in the 2023 Tri Nations in Barranquilla. Of note is that fullback Guilherme Coghetto will hang-up his boots following the competition in Asunción.
In addition to the Brazilian-based players the roster also contains Lorenzo Massari, Antônio Zanatta and Leonel Moreno who play in Italy and Felipe Rosa and Matheus Rocha who play their rugby in Portugal.
Junior players João Amaral and Gustavo Sirino both earn first call-ups. They are in-line for the test debuts. On the other hand there are two notable names missing. Center Robert Tenório is in the USA while front-rower Wilton Rebolo is playing in New Zealand.
