Players from USA and Canada to Play at Rugby World Cup 2023

The USA will not play at Rugby World Cup 2023 and neither will Canada. Players from both countries will, however, compete at the sport’s showcase tournament.

Romania’s roster contains Robert Irimescu. He received a call-up for Romania in February. Irimescu is from New York and earned Collegiate All-American honors while at Penn State. After three seasons of Major League Rugby with New York and DC, Irimescu opted to pursue international honors for Romania. He speaks fluent Romanian and qualifies through his parents, who are both from Constanta.

Scotland hooker Ewan Ashman spent the first four years of his life in Toronto. His Scottish father worked in Canada for eight years. Ashman moved to England, the country of his mother, as a young boy.

Three countries from the Americas will compete at Rugby World Cup 2023. All three are from South America. Argentina qualified directly as a result of finishing in the top three of their pool at Rugby World Cup 2019. Uruguay qualified as Americas 1 and Chile qualified as Americas 2. Chile eliminated Canada while the USA fell to Portugal in the repechage final.

Examples of additional North American born players who may feature are Titi Lamositele for Samoa and for Jeremy Loughman and Joe McCarthy for Ireland.
