Santiago Medrano to the Top 14 as World Cup Medical Joker

Santiago Medrano was left out of Argentina’s roster for Rugby World Cup 2023. He will nonetheless be playing in France. Top 14 club Lyon have signed the Argentine tight-head on a short-term deal during the Super Rugby off-season.

With 31 test caps to his name Medrano, is one of Argentina’s leading tight head props. He was a regular throughout the Mario Ledesma years but has been overtaken by others under Michael Cheika. Former Lyon tight head Francisco Gómez Kodela is Cheika’s starting tight head prop.

Medrano is an experienced campaigner in Super Rugby. He played for Los Jaguares from 2018-2020 and for the Western Force from 2021-2023. He will return to Western Australia for Super Rugby 2024.

Sordoni played as a replacement for the Argentina XV against Chile on Saturday. The match was the second of four for the Argentine next-of-XV during the RWC warm-up window. He was a replacement for Lucio Sordoni who had started at tight head against New Zealand the prior month.

Such is Argentina’s depth at the present that neither Medrano nor Sordoni made the roster. Cheika opted for Francisco Gómez Kodela, Joel Sclavi and Eduardo Bello. Medrano was on the RWC 2019 roster. He played in all four matches including starting in the win against the USA.
