Miami Sharks sign Cheetahs flanker Roelof Smit

The Miami Sharks have revealed their second official signing ahead of their inaugural Major League Rugby campaign. South African flanker Roelof Smit will make the move from the Currie Cup, following Pumas scrumhalf Tomás Cubelli to the south of Florida.

Smit, 30, represented South Africa at the 2013 World Rugby u20 Championship and made his senior provincial debut with the Blue Bulls that same year. After impressing in the 2016 Super Rugby season he would earn selection to the senior Springbok squad for their European trip. After impressing against the Barbarians Smit was poised to make his test debut but an injury in training saw him ruled out for the remainder of the tour.

In 2020 Smit left the Bulls for the Lions, and then had a short stint with Western Province before joining the Cheetahs late last year. Though typically deployed at the openside position in South Africa, it could be on the blindside where the 240lbs (109kg) specimen finds himself in Miami with Uruguayan openside Manuel Ardao in advanced talks to join the Sharks.
