Santiago Cordero reaches 50 cap milestone

Santiago Cordero will reach a milestone on Saturday. The winger will earn his 50th test cap for Argentina on Saturday. Cordero will start against South Africa in the final home match before departing for the World Cup. The 33-man roster will be named at midday on Monday.

Cordero is the 805th Puma. The winger from Regatas Bella Vista will earn his 50th cap in his home town of Buenos Aires. He will become the 44th Puma to reach the milestone of 50 test matches.The same match will see Agustín Creevy becoming the first to reach 100 test matches.

Creevy and Cordero have been involved in many test matches together. Both were staring players at Rugby World Cup 2015. Creevy was the captain and Cordero was highly active as a try-scorer and as a creator. He had two assists in the Quarter Final win over Ireland in Cardiff, Wales.

Cordero is a product of Argentina’s High Performance system. He played for Argentina at the 2012 and 2013 u20 Championships. He played both wing and fullback and debuted playing in the former also in 2013. Cordero also helped Argentina qualify for the 2016 Olympic Games.

As a professional player, Cordero has played Super Rugby for Los Jaguares in addition to playing abroad. He has succeeded in every professional team that he has played for. The now 29-year-old played for the Exeter Chiefs from 2017-2019 and for Bordeaux from 2019-2023. He has signed for Connacht in the United Rugby Championship (URC) beginnings after the World Cup.

For his country, Cordero has not only played a lot of test rugby but he has also done so against a long-list of opponents. Cordero has caps against 16 countries. Leading his list is New Zealand with 12 test matches. Of Argentina’s remaining confirmed opponents in 2023, Cordero is yet to face Spain or Samoa.
