Brazil Fixtures 2023

Brazil’s fixtures for 2023 are coming together. Os Tupis’ fixtures will come in two varieties. First, Brazil will compete in the 2023 South American 4 Nations in Paraguay in August. Second, Brazil will compete in a special competition in Spain in November.

An announcement of the dates and matches venues for the tournament in Spain is forthcoming. When the November tour is made official Brazil will have a total of six matches. None of the matches will be home games for Brazil. The South American 4 Nations will be staged entirely in Asunción, Paraguay while November’s 4 Nations Invitational tournament will see Brazil, Canada and the USA all playing each other, and Los Leones, in Spain.

The South American 4 Nations will consist of Brazil, Chile, Colombia and Paraguay. Brazil, Colombia and Paraguay will all field their test teams while Chile will compete as the next-of-XV, the Chile XV. This will see a separate roster competing than that which will play against the Argentina XV while the South American 4 Nations is being played.

The November competition in Spain will be played after Rugby World Cup 2023. It includes four countries that all missed out on places at the World Cup. Qualifiers saw Brazil defeating Paraguay but being eliminated by losing qualifying matches against Uruguay and Chile. Canada and the USA exchanged wins before the former was eliminated by Chile and the latter lost to Uruguay.

In repechage, the USA competed to a draw against Portugal to miss out on a place at the World Cup by the narrowest of margins. RWC 2023 is the first Men’s tournament without a North American competitor.

Portugal claimed the 20th and final spot. Earlier in 2022 Spain had qualified for Rugby World Cup 2023 but World Rugby disqualified Spain for breaching player eligibility laws. Meanwhile, powerful unions are busy recruiting players capped by other countries; including the USA losing a top name to Samoa. This gulf is an outcome of World Rugby governance.

Spain has since restructured. The new administration has organized for Spain to play host to Argentina in Madrid in a Rugby World Cup warm-up later this month. It is one part of a flourishing relationship between Spain and the Americas.

The 4 Nations is November will continue to grow Spain’s relations with the Americas. Spain, Brazil, Canada and the USA have populations well above the average of the 20 participants. They are also instances of possible teams in a 24-team Rugby World Cup.
