Europe Notes – Americas Players Transfers

Player transfers continue during the European off-season. While all eyes are on Rugby World Cup preparations teams continue to assemble their rosters for the 2023-2023 season. There have been recent signings from the Americas and transfers of Americas players within Europe.

Argentine prop Mariano Filomeno has signed for Mont de Marsan. He makes the move from Tarbes to the Pro D2 side as a medical joker. Filomeno previously played in Spain as well as in Súper Rugby Americana de Rugby (SLAR) for Os Cobras. Additional movement in France sees Axel Muller departing the Top 14 relegated Brive for Périgueux.

Los Pampas captain Santiago Ruiz has signed for Benetton. Ruiz is uncapped though has played for the Argentina XV. He holds an Italian passport. The move follows an excellent season in Super Rugby Americas 2023.

Further player movement involving Italy sees Benjamín Madero remaining at Viadana but now with a new role. Madero will now be player-coach. Fellow uncapped Argentine Alfonso Zottola departs Viadana for Rovigo.

Movement in Spain sees Vicente Boronat joining Universidad de Burgos. The CASI flanker moves to Europe for his first contract abroad. He will play alongside fellow Argentines including Estanislao Bay and Tomás Carrió.

In addition to Argentine player movement there has also been recent Brazilian movement. Wilton Rebolo has joined Northland in New Zealand. The Brazilian will play in New Zealand’s NPC before returning to the Western Force in Australia for Super Rugby Pacific 2024.
