Beukeboom hat trick leads Canada to big win over Australia

Canada cruised to a one-sided 45-7 win over Australia to wrap up the Pacific Four at TD Place in Ottawa on Friday night. Player of the Match Tyson Beukeboom celebrated her 60th test cap with three tries in an all-action performance to lead the way for the Maple Leafs.

It was early dominance for the Canadian pack but it would take 16 minutes to finally break down the Australian defense. The scrum got the shove-on and when it wheeled to the right, Sophie de Goede broke from the back and went in under the posts with her own kick making it a full seven.

Australia found a response after regaining possession from the restart. Ashley Marsters crashed over from close range with Lori Cramer on target with the extras, but Canada came straight back to retake the lead. Again it was the scrum setting the platform and this time the ball was passed down the line until Sarah-Maude Lachance went over in the corner.

Beukeboom got her first from in tight after the forwards had driven the Wallaroos backwards in a rolling maul. It was then a double for de Goede just before halftime as she brushed aside multiple would-be tacklers, her own conversion making it a 26-7 halftime lead.

The second half was all Canada. Claire Gallagher scored her first international try with a show-and-go to score between the sticks after de Goede had made ground off the back of a scrum. A string of penalties then resulted in Eva Karpani seeing yellow, and Beukeboom got her brace on the back of a driving maul.

Bree-Anna Cheatham’s high shot on Emily Tuttosi temporarily left the Wallaroos with only 13 players as a second yellow was brandished. Just before the sin-bin was up Beukeboom would wrap up the scoring with her third. It was the pick of the bunch, with Gabrielle Senft popping off the deck to a supporting Beukeboom for to finish in the corner.

Both teams will now compete in the top tier of the year-end WXV tournament. Before that Canada will travel to England for two tests against the Red Roses in late September.
