Uruguay Primed for World Rugby u20 Trophy

Uruguay is primed for the World Rugby u20 Trophy. Los Teritos join Scotland, USA and Zimbabwe in Pool A of the tournament. The South Americans open their campaign against the USA at Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi, Kenya on Saturday, July 15.

The tournament will run from July 15- 30. Head Coach Guillermo Storace has named a 28-man roster.  The homegrown players are a part of Uruguay’s next stage of development. Players will have the opportunity of going on to play professionally for Peñarol, for Los Teros 7’s and for the test team.

Uruguay is a prior World Rugby u20 Trophy champion. Los Teritos won the title in 2008. It was an all-South American final with Uruguay overcoming Chile 20-8 in the final. Uruguay finished third in two other tournaments. Los Teritos defeated Tonga 44–43 in the 2015 Bronze Final and Namibia 34–12 in the 2017 Bronze Final.

The 2023 Junior World Trophy is to be the first edition since Rugby World Cup 2019. The most recent edition was played in Brazil in 2019. Uruguay finished fourth, losing the Bronze Final 29-27 against Tonga.

Many players from that match made the jump to Los Teros. Indeed, there are players who are now in Uruguay’s camp preparing for Rugby World Cup 2023. They include props Ignacio Péculo and Reinaldo Piussi, second-rower Felipe Aliaga, flanker Carlos Deus, center Felipe Arcos Pérez and fullback Baltazar Amaya.
