South American 7’s – Explosive First Day of Paris Olympics Qualifiers

There was plenty of action in Montevideo, Uruguay on Saturday. In the opening day of the South American 7’s qualifiers for the Paris 2024 Olympics Men’s and Women’s moved towards securing places.

One place per gender is on the line. Day two, on Sunday will see the action continuing. The competition can be watched live on the Sudamerica Rugby youtube channel.

Day One saw Brazil undefeated in the Women’s competition and Uruguay unbeaten in the Men’s. They are now the favorites to qualify for Paris 2024. Others have everything to play for too as two teams per gender will also qualify for repechage.

Brazil’s Women’s team, As Yaras, opened with a 27-0 win over Peru. An identical scoreline was how Brazil vs Paraguay played out. Brazil’s other match of day one was a comfortable 17–5 win over Argentina.

Uruguay’s star on home soil was Baltazar Amaya. As he did for the test team against Romania last November, Amaya was electric. He tan in six tries on day one. He bagged a hat-trick against Peru, two against Colombia and one against Chile.

It was not all smooth sailing for Los Teros 7’s. The Uruguayans were pushed to the limit by Chile. Uruguay won 14-12 with the two conversions by Guillermo Lijtenstein being what ultimately separated the teams.

Chile’s 19-12 win over Brazil means that Los Cóndores 7’s are well-placed for day two. Chile ought to have few problems in securing a place in repechage.
