Colombia Complete Road Win over Brazil

Colombia were 18-15 winners over Brazil on Sunday. Played at the Estádio Dutrinha in Cuiabá, Mato Grosso the away team rebounded from their narrow loss against the USA u23 to end the Americas Rugby Trophy on a high. The match was the third and final fixture of the Americas Rugby Trophy.

Las Tucanes were the first to score in Cuiabá. Fullback Valentina Tapias landed a penalty. It was followed by the opening try of the contest. Second-rower Paola Delgado scored in thr try zone in the 17th minute.

A vital moment followed. Colombia were down to 14 woman as tight head prop Carolina Naranjo was red carded for kicking an opponent. The one-woman distant age hurt Colombia. Brazil hit-back with a bang. Tamires Costa’s 33rd minute try made it 8-5. Colombia had the final say of the opening half. Tapias’ second penalty made it 11-5 at half-time.

After ten scoreless minutes to open the second-half, Brazil scored their second try. Scrum-half Patrícia Bodeman kicked for winger Lohana Valente to score. Valente’s try was unconverted. As such the score was now 11-10 in favor of Las Tucanes.

Following a missed penalty from Tapias, Colombia all but sealed the result. Left winger Juliana Soto touched down ten minutes from full-time.

As Yaras were now out of touch. They needed a response and found it; Ana Carolina Santana scored a try three minutes after Soto. The try again came from a kick. The conversion was again not good. With it the scoring ended with Colombia three points ahead.

The Brazilians were disappointed while Colombia celebrated. Victor, however, belonged to the USA. Points differential meant that Colombia and the USA finished equal on six points but the USA conceded three fewer points to be crowned tournament winners.

Brazil and Colombia will meet again next month in Medellín. Matches are set for July 05 and 09 in the Colombian city. A place is on the line at the WXV, the new world league.
