Canada and Uruguay to determine 7s Series fate on Sunday

The fate of Canada and Uruguay on the World Sevens Series will be decided on Sunday in London. Both teams finished the opening day of their Relegation Playoff with one win and one defeat. Their status as a core team on next year’s circuit depends on victory on Day Two.

Canada started with defeat against Kenya, with a Keven Wekesa hat-trick overshadowing a double from Alex Russell. Uruguay were up next and it was Brock Webster’s conversion of his second try of the game that gave the Maple Leafs the victory over Los Teros to keep their hopes alive.

Baltazar Amaya scored a brace for Uruguay to give them the win over Tonga to start the day. The Tongans were then outclassed by the Simbas, with Wekesa remarkably recording another triple. Kenya are the only unbeaten side in the pool thus far.

Points differential is likely to come into the equation in determining who makes the Relegation Final. Canada will first play Tonga at 6:57am Eastern followed immediately by Uruguay vs Kenya.

In the main draw Argentina have reached the Cup Quarter Finals after finishing at the top of Pool B, with blowout wins over Japan and Fiji. Next up will be a rematch against Ireland, who edged Los Pumas be two points in the pool stage.

The USA’s winless streak continues though they did manage a draw against South Africa. New Zealand were a step ahead while Great Britain were winners by just two points. The Eagles will face Spain with 9th place their best possible finish.
