Canada to play Argentina in Toulouse 7s Men’s Semi Final

Canada have reached a World Sevens Men’s Cup Semi Final for the first time this season as they upset Australia in the Quarter Finals. Argentina will be their opponents, Los Pumas knocking off South Africa for what will be their fifth top-four finish on this year’s circuit.

Overall leaders New Zealand pulled away in Canada’s first match of the tournament. Thomas Isherwood scored twice in a shutout win over Uruguay, and then five different players touched down to secure their spot in the Quarter Finals. Australia took a 10-7 lead in the second half but Alex Russell’s try in the final minute gave the Canadians their biggest win of the season.

Uruguay had beaten the Simbas before falling to Canada. They gave New Zealand a stern challenge to wrap up the pool stage, ultimately falling just two points short. Los Teros then cruised past Japan with Mateo Viñals scoring a double.  Next up will be Fiji in the 9th place Semi Final

Luciano González Rizzoni and Rodrigo Isgro each grabbed a brace against Germany to start Argentina’s account. Spain proved a worthy opponent but Marcos Moneta’s second try of the game saw Argentina coming back from a 19-nil deficit to win. Moneta’s hat trick was the highlight in a blowout victory over Great Britain to sweep the pool, and then two more from Moneta saw Los Pumas past the Blitzboks.

The Men’s Eagles were winless in the pool stage, which started with a draw against Fiji. Hosts France were the better side in their second match and South Africa pulled away in the second half of their last pool game. A poor performance against Spain in the 9th place Quarter Final will see the USA taking on Kenya in the 13th place Semi Final.
