Uruguay Rugby Fixtures 2023

Uruguay will be one of twenty competitors at Rugby World Cup 2023. The tournament is to be the fifth involving Los Teros and the South American team’s third in consecutive Rugby World Cups.

South America has achieved unprecedented attention in recent years. In addition to Argentina being among the giants of the sport, Uruguay made history against Fiji at Rugby World Cup 2019 while Chile will debut at Rugby World Cup 2023. Chile’s debut is massive for South America though it is bitter-sweet for North Americans.

Chile is to be one of Uruguay’s opponents before the Rugby World Cup. The teams will play a test match in Montevideo on Saturday, July 29. Los Teros will play three warm-up matches before flying to France. The others will be against Namibia and the Argentina XV. All three will be at the Estadio Charrúa, Uruguay’s national rugby stadium.

The scheduling of a match against Namibia raises eye-brows. Uruguay and Namibia are in the same pool at France 2023. The fixture comes due to Uruguay having made a difficult time securing matches. Uruguay unsuccessfully sought games at home against opposition from Europe and Oceania.

Uruguay’s RWC match against Namibia will be the first between the countries at Rugby World Cups. The exciting fixture will be Uruguay’s third match. It will follow matches against France in Lille and Italy in Nice and Lyon and be before facing New Zealand in Lyon.

Uruguay has never previously played a test match against either France or New Zealand. The Argentina XV warm-up match will be the toughest preparation before the World Cup. Of note is that, despite upsetting Fiji in Kamaishi, Uruguay was unable to play any home match against a Tier 1 side during the RWC 2019-2023 cycle.
