Argentines Abroad: 2023 All-Stars

Professional seasons are coming to a close for the year. With that in mind it is now an appropriate time to take a look at which players have been the best in every league. Argentine players are spread around the world. All elite professional leagues contain Argentines.

The 2022 All-Stars identifies the top forward and back from the English Premiership, French Top 14 and Pro D2, United Rugby Championship, Super Rugby, Major League Rugby and Super Rugby America.

The number of players differs across the different leagues. In some cases there were many contenders. In the English Premiership Matías Alemanno, Agustín Creevy, Juan Martín González and  Julián Montoya were all in the discussion for best forward. Similarly, Facundo Bosch, Facundo Isa, Marcos Kremer, Joel Sclavi were all considered for best forward in the Top 14.

There were a range of variety of players in contention across all positions. Only three could make the All-Stars back-three and thus Lucio Cinti, Santiago Cordero, Bautista Delguy, Juan Imhoff and Sebastián Cancelliere and Ignacio Mendy miss out. All had excellent seasons.

Scrum-half was different. Injuries saw the season cut short for United Rugby Championship (URC) Pumas Gonzalo Bertranou and Gonzalo García. Tomás Cubelli had his first match for Biarritz well into the Pro D2 season. Ignacio Inchauspe has been on top of his game in Super Rugby Americas and fully-deserves his spot. Uruguay’s Santiago Arata is the undisputed leading South American scrum-half.

The Argentines Abroad: 2023 All-Stars provides reflection for Los Pumas’ World Cup roster. The radar is firmly fixed on names on the All-Stars. The projected team to start against England is close but not the same as the All-Stars. There is plenty of competition for spots in the team and the 33-man roster.
