South America Outlast Black Lion in Montevideo

South America registered a home win over Black Lion on Friday. The Sudamérica XV had home advantage against the Georgians in Montevideo. Playing under the banner of the South American governing body, the Sudamérica XV converted a 14-5 half-time lead into a 28-24 victory.

The win was secured seven minutes from full-time. Former World Cup Puma and South America Captain Santiago González Iglesias was the hero. His late score was converted by Manuel Nogués who landed 4/4 for the match.

The half-time lead had been built on a two tries to one 40 minute period. Black Lion winger Akaki Tabutsadze scored his first of two tries for the match. The non-converted score was the only first half points by the Georgians.

The Sudamérica XV touched down twice in the opening 40 minutes. Late replacement for Rodrigo Bruno, Omar Gutiérrez scored the first. The second went to Chilean hooker Augusto Bohme. The Cóndor went on to claim a second later in the match.

The Georgians came out firing after the interval. A smart play culminated in Akaki Tabutsadze bagging his second. Luka Matkava landed the conversion. He also added another this time from flanker Sandro Mamamtavrishvili’s try.

South America hit-back through their captain. González Iglesias scored after impressive play from Nogués. Of note is that the former Argentina XV scrum-half played the match out of position at fly half.

Demur Tapladze then went over in response for the Georgians. The score added late tension from which South America responded with the Chilean hooker, Bohme scoring his second try. Nogués converted for a 28-24 lead. Late tension followed before South America ultimately outlasted Black Lion for the win.

If the match was anything to go by on there is strong reasoning for South America to play again sooner rather than later. The exhibition team will likely assemble again to face touring teams in the coming years.
