Peñarol knock down the Héroes de Curupayty walls against Yacare

A fine performance from Peñarol saw the Uruguayans conquering Yacare on Saturday. Played at the Héroes de Curupayty, Peñarol were 43-17 winners. The result moves the Uruguayans closer to securing a home Super Rugby Americas 2023 Semi Final.

The teams traded blood early on. Captains Felipe Etcheverry and Ignacio Inchauspe each slotted a penalty in the opening ten minutes. What followed was a solid period for the home side; Yacare came away with the game’s opening try. Mariano Garcete scored from a pick-and-go following raids from the Yacare forwards.

Peñarol regathered to hit-back with a band. The Uruguayans ran in four tries in response before half-time. First, Santiago Álvarez chased and gathered an Etchverry kick. He showed genuine pace to out sprint centers. Second, Guillermo Pujadas powered over from close range. Third, Manuel Diana was where he needed to be to score with a man over. Fourth, Gastón Mieres scored from an Etcheverry cross-kick.

The result was secured at half-time. Yacare, nonetheless, went about their work in the second-half. Pressure saw yellow cards to Santiago Álvarez and Tomás Inciarte. Peñarol received a penalty try for the second and were down to thirteen men.

Yacare tried to add more points, but the Peñarol forwards were well organized and had Etcheverry organizing play from scrum-half. Peñarol responded in the final corner with two tries. Inciarte sliced over while filing-in at scrum-half and Rodrigo Silva was rewarded for a solid game by scoring with time up.

Peñarol fly home to prepare for the top-of-the-table clash next weekend. Peñarol host Los Dogos on Friday. Yacare remain in Asunción to take-on Os Cobras next Sunday. The latter of the two matches is now vital as the race for the play-off’s heats up.
