The Toronto Arrows have reinforced their squad with two experienced professionals from France. Versatile back Peter Nelson has signed on from Aurillac with second row Shay Kerry joining from Rouen Normandie. Both have featured in the French Pro D2 in recent months.
Nelson is originally from Northern Ireland but has won 15 caps for Canada since debuting ahead of the 2019 World Cup. The 30-year-old plays flyhalf at international level but has most often been used as a fullback in his European career. A left-footed goal kicker, he can also operate in the midfield if needed.
Kerry, 28, hails from England but spent much of his youth in New Zealand where he earned national under-17 honors. He has since played professionally for French clubs Oyonnax and Narbonne, and English Championship side Ampthill. The 6’6″ (1.98m) forward is a direct replacement for Micaiah Torrance-Read, who has returned to New Zealand after suffering a season-ending knee injury.
The two signings follow last week’s additions of center Dawson Fatoric and winger D’Shawn Bowen. Both Nelson and Kerry have arrived in Toronto and could debut in this weekend’s home opener against the New York Ironworkers at York Lions Stadium.
